In this day of corporate giants, some of them owning as many as 1100 radio stations, it seems almost impossible for the independent singer-songwriter-recording artist to have a chance to make a major impact on the music business. The easy thing to do would be to shrug your shoulders and say, "Well, there's just no way - we independents don't have a chance."
That's simply not true. You do have a chance, but it will take hard work and determination, talent, and, of course, money. Unlike the music business of years ago, everything today is the bottom line. There's no way that a major record company or a recognized independent will even listen to your music unless you can prove to them that you have had radio airplay, that there has been acceptance by the listeners, and that you have, better yet, sold a good amount of CD's, even from the trunk of your car or from on the stage at your gigs.
No matter how powerful the conglomerates are, if your music is creative, original, different, and if it is recorded well and the performance is as good as anything on the radio, then you do, indeed, have a chance.
At Positive Feedback Communications we do not guarantee you are going to get a hit record, or become a hit recording artist. We can honestly cite, as we will later, many examples, over the years of people who were content to do their own thing, record their own music, do their own gigs, sell their own CD's and make a good living doing it. In today's music business, most people I know who have talent and want to get into the business, are not necessarily concerned with being on a major recording label, such as Columbia, Sony, RCA, etc.
Thousands of musicians all over America are working niche-marketing, special clubs, multi-cultural festivals, corporate production dates, high schools, colleges… the list is endless! In order to get more money for your bookings, and in order to increase your bookings, you need the credentials to show that you have something more to offer than the average recording artist.
Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to work with many talented acts, such as Todd Rundgren, Livingston Taylor, Aerosmith, Charlie Daniels, Mike Reid, Midnight Star, and dozens of others. Our specialty today is helping the unknown become known. We do that by a well-defined, intelligently planned promotion process. If you feel that your music is good enough to get to radio, and that it has a fair chance, we will guarantee that you will get that "fair chance."
Our method is very simple. We take your master recording, and put it on your own label, if you prefer, or let you use the world-renown Fraternity Record Label, which is 50 years old, and is America's oldest, continually operating independent record label. Fraternity Records boasts 8 national Number 1 hit records, several of them breaking records in the music industry with such artists as Lonnie Mack, the Casino's, Gene Austin, Cathy Carr, Jimmy Dorsey, John Gary, Bobby Bare, etc. The United States Postal Service issued a first-class stamp honoring Fraternity Recording Artist, Jimmey Dorsey.
The average promotion program works like this. Once the CD's are manufactured by one of our quality plants, we then go into the data base and pick the proper format to suit your music. Just shot-gun shattering a mailing to a bunch of radio stations with no proper format in mind to match your music, is throwing money away. After analyzing your music and determining the format, which is done by you and us at PFC and several of our other promotion people, we will go into our database, and pick a minimum of 1000 radio stations.
As an example, let's say you are an alternative rock group. If that's the case, the perfect format for you would be alternative radio, which is college, double A, triple A, Americana, and some variety and NPR stations. We will cover every single station of that particular format with your record and an 11x17 promotion piece, along with an accompanying 1st class return postage-paid response card. All printing will be customized to your particular job.
Your CD will go out by itself to each radio station. It does no good to send your CD to only the major radio stations. Frankly, they are going to be the last ones to pick up on it. It has to start grass roots. Usually, the tertiary and the secondary stations will start playing it, and after exposure has been successful, many of the major-market stations might give it a shot. It is a combination of all these stations, the mom and pop stations, the tertiary stations, the secondary markets and the major markets, that will give you the opportunity to compete with the major artists who are being played on a regular basis.
Approximately three weeks after your CD has been mailed to every station in it's proper format, the independent record promoter (in this case, Bill Wence, from Nashville, Tennessee) starts calling the stations and does an immediate mailing to approximately 150 stations with which he has had contact over the years.
Approximately one month after your CD is mailed, we start getting reports from the radio stations. That information is e-mailed, faxed or called to Bill Wence on a daily basis. He uses this ammunition, along with his strong, proven promotional efforts, to start picking up radio stations all over the country. Bill Wence does one job, and one job only! He is one of America's top independent record promoters. While working your record, all of the information that I receive regarding your airplay is funneled to Bill. Bill combines that with the stations that he has picked up, and every Monday you receive a hard copy report of all the stations and the activity that is taking place with your CD.
Bill works a minimum of twelve weeks. If the CD is showing great promise at that time, he usually works several more weeks as part of the package. Bill is on the phone to radio programmers and music directors all over America. His thirty years in the business insures that your CD is going to get the absolute most personal attention that it can.
It is not uncommon to pick up hundreds of stations that will play your cd. That's a lot of radio stations, and for the amount of money being spent; it's the "best bang for your buck!" If you don't believe it, go out to local radio stations in your area, take them your CD and just try to get it played on the radio. It's like anything else, if you want the job done right, you hire a professional.
Bill Wence and PFC have been working together for over a decade. In that time, we have helped people just like you. People who had strong material, well recorded and well performed, to get on radio all over America and to compete with the national hit artists.
The one great thing about the music industry (even though the conglomerates are trying to control everything) is that if it's in the groove, if the song is there, the performance is right, then nothing can stop your record from getting the attention it deserves. Ultimately, it will become a hit record or you will get a deal with a major or independent record company.
The absolute worst-case scenario is that because of the increased airplay on your cd, your bookings will increase, you will command more money for each booking, and you will use the radio station airplay and the other credentials, as a means of being even more successful in your career. There are over a dozen artists that we've worked with over the years that are making a very good living doing music only. Here are some of the acts Bill has worked with over the years:
| Pearl Jam |
Orleans |
Bobby Bare |
| Willie Nelson |
Tom T. Hall |
Waylon Jennings |

Call us if you want a fair chance with your music, and believe me, in the music industry today, just getting a "fair chance" puts you way ahead of the game. There are thousands of aspiring singers, songwriters, recording artists and bands that have much talent, great songs, excellent production, but will never ever hear their music on the radio. It all boils down to one simple fact. Like everything else in life, if you want to get the job done, you hire professionals!
PFC and Bill Wence have been working together for more than a decade and we welcome any questions you may have about our CD promotional packages. We can't give a price here because there are too many variables regarding manufacturing, packaging, amounts of radio stations to be mailed to, amount of promotion, etc.
Here are a few of our recent clients and the results they received by hiring PFC and Bill Wence to put their total promotional package together.

Many of these artists are actually making a living playing music full time. Steve Free has won five consecutive ASCAP Songwriter Cash Awards, and received the Governor's Award from the State of Ohio in the category of individual recording artists. This was in a total of 59 nominations in seven categories. If you feel your music is good enough to compete on the national airways, give us a call... We'll be glad to listen. We won't twist your arm. We won't blow smoke. We will tell you if we think your music has a fair chance to get enough radio airplay, so that the listeners will be the final judges.
